Photo captured for a photojournalism assignment in college, depicting my roommate's feet inside our Biola University dorm room.
From 2012-2016, I studied photojournalism at Biola University. I had the privilege of being taught under the expertise of Mike Kitada, a seasoned photographer who worked for the Orange County Register for 25 years.
One of my favorite assignments that Professor Kitada gave our class was to take a "Slice of Life" photo—an image of a simple, everyday moment.
When I began scoping out ideas for this assignment, I was in my dorm room and noticed my roommate's feet dangling over the top edge of our bunk. I snapped the photo above and was delighted with the amusing result. It was playful and fun and, in my opinion, perfectly captured the essence of college life.
The photo brought a good laugh to myself as well as my professor and classmates.
This assignment taught me that in the midst of capturing serious moments as a photojournalist, there is also room for humor and lightheartedness that adds a warm touch of humanity to documentation.
